Abstract: A permanent mold was designed to measure the load and displacement of a solidifying restrained casting. This test set up simulates the situation where a shape casting is cracking due to hot tearing. The new design is a modification to an earlier test mold jointly developed by CanmetMATERIALS (CMAT), Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and McMaster University. The concern raised on the impact of turbulent mold filling in the original mold led to the modifications. The modified test set-up overcomes the issue associated with fluid flow, as the filling is laminar. This paper presents the results from the trials conducted to validate the test setup using a common Al-Cu alloy.
